Here are just a few of the new breed of jazz musicians. It's not new players doing the old thing. These guys are artists, and they are creating new ways to play music. It's modern and its jazz. It seems pretty obvious that these albums are motivated by a need to create innovative music, and that selling lots of copies was very much secondary. Don't take my word for it.

I can suggest these albums because I listen to these albums very often. Also, I have seen almost every musician on this list at least once. They are all post 2000. There are definitely NOT any smooth "jazz" albums on this list. If you are searching for smooth "jazz" don't even bother with my list, just skip it entirely.

On a personal note, I am a big fan of the 1960's jazz (Mingus, Dolphy, Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis...) and I consider the albums listed below to be from the same adventerous spirit that the 1960's innovators tapped into. Anyway, enough of my rambling. Here's the list.

Drew Gress- Seven Black Butterflies

Scott Colley- Archetiect of the Silent Moment.

John Ellis- Roots Branches and Leaves

Kurt Rosenwinkel-Deep Song (any album)

Seamus Blake- Stranger Things Have Happened

Tim Berne and Science Friction- The Sublime and the...(live)

Ried Anderson- Dirty Showtunes

Ari Hoenig- Inversations

Dafnis Prieto- Absolute Quintet

Mat Maneri Quartet- Blue Decco

Roy Campbell- It's Krunch Time

Human Feel- Galore

Aaron Parks- Invisible Cinema

Bernie Maupin Quartet- Early Reflections

Mario Pavone- Toulon Days

Charles Lloyd Rabo De Nube

Chris Potter- Song For Anyone

William Parker- Painter's Spring

Jame Carter Present Tense

Steve Turre- The Spirits Up Above

Most of the musicians on this list are on the current New York City downtown jazz scene.

I was turned onto most of these musicians through listening to the great radio station WKCR. There is no other jazz station like WKCR. Check their schedule.
