My son and I just heard Henry Mancini's "Baby Elephant Walk" on the radio and we're trying to figure out what musical instrument has the melody line at the beginning of the song.

At the beginning the instrument is originally an oboe.

It is an Eb clarinet. Much shorter than a normal Bb clarinet. Can be heard extensively in a symphony work by Richard Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks.

Do you mean the lick that is at the very beginning of the Mancini version? That's the organ right before it goes into the chord vamp.

Interesting question, never thought about it much. It sounds like clarinet (oboe?!?!). Searching brought up sheet music for brass, clarinet and a couple of saxes. Since it's not sax or brass, that would make it clarinet.

It sounds like an oboe, or maybe a clarinet to me. I could be wrong though, as my favorite instrument is a saute pan and a ladle.

You mean the music from HATARI ? I have the LP and have to play it. Will come back to your question.
