I'd recommend just getting a "best of" album. I am sure there will be some good cuts on there. Also, you can just go to the public library and borrow some of albums for free.

You can also watch the movie "Bird" starring Forrest Whitaker and directed by Clint Eastwood. That would probably help you with research.

Parker made most of his recordings before the era that people made albums, so it's not like he went into the studio and recorded things an album at a time. He would usually do two or three numbers at a time, which were collected onto albums more often than not long after he died.

His best studio work was with the Savoy and Dial labels in the late 1940s. His best live work is found in various places, but I would suggest either the Royal Roost recordings or the Massey Hall concert, where he fronts an incredible all-star band including Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell and Max Roach.

Personally, I think you should sell your possessions in order to buy Parker's complete Savoy and Dial sessions and Royl Roost recordings, but that's because he's arguably the most important sax player in the history of jazz, not to mention one of the most exciting and exhilarating. In the meantime, links to his selected works are below. Enjoy!

The best collection of Charlie Parker (in my opinion) is 'Best of the Complete Savoy and Dial Studio Recordings'. You can even download this from Napster. His best live recording is 'The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall'. This is regarded by many as the greatest jazz concert of all time, featuring Bird with Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Charles Mingus and Bud Powell. It was recorded live at Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on May 15, 1953.

You cannot miss by buying these as starters, as they are the best!

Aside from my opinion, his most important albums are often considered to be...

The Legendary Dial Sessions and Bird with Strings.

!945 and 1947 are important years as far as Dizzy and Bird creating be bop.

I can't give a personal opinion. I don't listen to Bird for pleasure. Maybe one day I will.

PS-There is a great radio show on every weekday morning from 8:20-10:00 am (eastern time). The name of the show is Bird Flight. Its a show about Bird, Dizzy and Max Roach. Phil Schapp is the host , and its incredible to listen to him talk and give you the inside scoop about the real story of Bird and his music. Schapp was friends with Dizzy and Max before they died. They told him stories of their experiences in a very affectionate way. Also, Schapp is a true historian of jazz. WKCR http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/
