Overall it'd be Alan Silva, but on a somewhat more mainstream level I could also live nicely with choosing Charles Mingus.

without a doubt, Charles Mingus. that's probably why I have 40 plus titles of his in my cd library. some runners-up would be Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Yusef Lateef (up through the mid 70s), Miles Davis (primarily the electric period of 1968-1975), Ornette Coleman and his acolytes, i.e., Don Cherry and Charlie Haden, John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett (not the past quarter century of trio stuff, however), Sam Rivers, Henry Threadgill and Jackie McLean, among others...

This may sound cliche but I'd have to say:

Miles Davis

His catalog is so deep and spans so many different eras of the genre. He has so many classics that you can just throw on and enjoy no matter what your mood.

My second favorite is probably Thelonious Monk. The man was so unique and truly an innovator.
