Question:
What's the Fastest Recording of Donna Lee?

I have three recordings that are particularly impressive, speed-wise.

1. Stefano Di Battista's take from the album "Parker's Mood"
2. Wynton Marsalis' take from the album "Live At The House of Tribes"
3. Tito Puente's take from the album "Concord Picante 25th Anniversary Collection"

Are there any recordings of Donna Lee which go faster than Battista's? His version clocks in at about 350 bpm.

I wish I could find a link to a listen to a long out-of-print LP on the Bee Hive label (Chicago based jazz label) called "Baritone Madness". On this recording Pepper Adams and Nick Brignola play "Donna Lee" well in excess of 300 beats per minute; this is quite a feat for any player, but when played by two baritone saxophonists this truly is heart-stopping, indeed.

Hopefully one day some entrepreneur will release some of the Bee Hive stuff on CD or in MP3 form. Its catalog included some really fine recordings from Sal Nistico and ex-Mingus trumpeter Ted Curson that I found equally educational and inspirational.

That's not 350 bpm, but it's sure damn quick.
